Oakton: Inaugural Senior Resource Fair

September 28, 2017

Dr Papanos Oakton3B

Oakton’s inaugural Senior Resource Fair was recently held at Oakton Arms.  Residents and guests were greeted by staff and vendors with bright smiles and vibrant energy for the event.  As attendees walked into the event they stopped at the Oakton information table to grab their check-in cards.  The check-in cards encouraged everyone to visit the vendors, learn more about their services and get a signature from each exhibitor so they could be entered in a raffle to win gift baskets full of healthy goodies. There was also a hearty and healthy selection of pastries, fruit, tasty beverages and more for enjoyment as attendees spoke to vendors.

Walgreens, Elderwerks, Great Lakes Caring, City of Des Plaines, Veteran Affairs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Rainbow Hospice spoke with attendees on what their programs offered.  Attendees had the option to join the activity aide in our ‘moving and grooving’ room where they participated in various chair and mental exercises.  Also, they were encouraged to get their blood pressure and blood sugar checked.  After circling the fair several times and enjoying a hosted lunch, visitor Mary Ann said, “I loved this event. I was able to walk around and talk to so many people!”

As the afternoon approached, the attendees were buzzing with anticipation for Dr. Papanos presentation on ‘Health Maintenance and Promotion’.  Dr. Nicholas Papanos is an internist and is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Community First Medical Center and has been in practice for more than 20 years.  His presentation touched on a vast number of topics including his proponent of quality of life and how our attendees could achieve this in simple steps.  Dr. Nicholas Papanos also engaged and interacted with the audience on various topics like the physical benefits of exercise, psychological benefits of exercise, social benefits of exercise, and dietary guidelines for the elderly.

As the Senior Fair came to a close the attendees chatted about the vast information they learned, their excitement for next year’s fair and the Generations at Oakton staff.  Janet D. a resident in our independent living facility Oakton Arms remarked, “I just love this place. My sister lived here for 10 years.  This is a great place to live.”
